6 More 3D Movies That Should've Gotten a Home Video Release
With as many 3D Blu-rays as there are available, it often seems like every 3D film ever made is capable of being viewed at home. But if you've seen the last list I created on this subject, you'll know that's sometimes not the case. There are plenty of 3D movies out there that haven't gotten released on 3D Blu-ray (or 3D DVD for that matter) for one reason or another. While my top 10 list covers some of the major films that need a release for their 3D version on home media, I have since have found 6 more films that deserved to be on that last that either didn't come to mind when I did the initial list or that I had discovered later after the list was made. Whatever the case, sit back, grab your popcorn, and revel in disappointment as we read through 6 3D movies that should've gotten a home video release.
#6: Jackass 3D
Throughout the years, Jackass, whether from their show or their movies, have garnered plenty of attention, and criticism through their constant use of what the MPAA would call "extremely crude and dangerous stunts." I have never gotten into Jackass, but I do know there are plenty of other people that have. And they would be the ones who would greatly appreciate Jackass 3D, which using the technology, places you right in the middle of those "extremely crude and dangerous stunts." Sadly, though, the extra "D" in Jackass 3 never saw a release on home media, never allowing those who didn't catch it at the theater to experience these stunts the way Jackass originally intended you to. If this film ever got a 3D Blu-ray release, I wouldn't pick it, hence why it's at the bottom of the list. But I can still see it pleasing many-a Jackass fans. And it would finally make the Beavis and Butt-head intro make sense.
#5: Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie 3D
Captain Underpants often gets put down for being juvenile and having a juvenile premise. That may be true, but Captain Under: The First Epic Movie is juvenile in all the best ways. The film knows it completely absurd and uses it to create some somewhat self-aware, slightly crude, but ultimately fun gags that kids will certainly love, and adults can have a fun time cringing at. Now in terms of its 3D, it remains pretty obscure. But while many people don't really talk about it, remember, this film came from Dreamworks. And if there's any animation company that knows how to create a good 3D film, that would be it. I haven't seen it at theater, so I can't say exactly how good the 3D is. But the people who have seen it that way have stated it benefited from the extra dimension and was surprisingly very "dynamic." And watching the surreal animation in 2D, I can kinda see why. Unfortunately though, without a 3D Blu-ray release, me and other die-hard 3D fans will probably never get to see Captain Underpants in its full three-dimensional form.
#4: IMAX: Pandas 3D
Just like A Beautiful Planet and NASCAR on my last list, this is another IMAX documentary made in 3D, and still being shown in some science museum IMAX theaters in 3D, but have for some strange reason, never seen a 3D Blu-ray release. Sure, IMAX: Pandas might just be another IMAX nature documentary. But who wouldn't want to see those cute little pandas up close in 3D at home? While I'd still vouch for A Beautiful Planet or NASCAR to get a 3D home release more than this one, it'd still be a happy day if this ever got a 3D Blu-ray.
#3: Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle 3D
Mowgli is a relatively obscure film that up I had not heard about up until a week ago. Apparently, it was based on The Jungle Book and directed by Andy Serkis. But because of the fact that it was overshadowed by the recently released Jungle Book remake from Disney a couple years before, it got taken up and dumped on Netflix, but not before getting a limited theatrical release in select cinemas, and that included a couple of IMAX 3D screens. From what I heard, the movie itself was so-so. But from what I've heard regarding the 3D, it was "spectacular" and "immersive." And being how good the Disney remake of The Jungle Book was as a point of reference, that sounds about right. Unfortunately though, because this has no 3D Blu-ray, and that Netflix seems to have no planning in releasing it that way, we'll most likely never get to see Mowgli the way it was intended.
#2: U2 3D
U2 3D is a concert film created by the band U2 to put you right in the middle of one of their concerts. But this isn't just another 3D Justin Bieber concert flick. This one received great reviews from critics and audiences alike when it came out, IMAX showings kept selling out, and its usage of 3D received ample amounts of praise, even from those who didn't really like 3D. U2 3D can't really be seen at home in any format, on 3D Blu-ray or 2D Blu-ray, or DVD for that matter. And while I have no doubts that big screen 3D is the best way to experience the film, even though I personally haven't saw it, it would still be an awesome day if this one ever got a 3D Blu-ray release.
#1: They Shall Not Grow Old 3D
They Shall Not Grow Old is a 2018 film created by Peter Jackson that takes old WWI footage, colorizes it, and converts it to 3D to put you in the midst of the great war, and it honors the brave soldiers who fought in it. Of all the films on this list, this is the one I would like to see in 3D the most, as not only does Cinemablend's To 3D or Not article on it give it a big thumbs up, but the way the movie uses the 3D is supposedly unlike anything I've seen before, being applied to old footage and making it feel all the more real. I've heard the movie itself was excellent and I'll probably pick up the 2D Blu-ray eventually. But man, if I choose any film on this or the previous list to get a 3D Blu-ray release, it would be this one. Being able to see WWI in the third dimension would most certainly make the film a complete experience, and make it more impactful because of that.
Are there any films that I've missed? Be sure to let me know in the comments. A side note: If Avatar: The Way of Water doesn't get a 3D Blu-ray release, I'll have to update the list. Anyway, thank you for reading and have a nice day.
